MARVELOUS MARVEL LADIES MONTH: SNOWBIRD

first appeared: X-Men #120 (1979)
who is she? Narya is a half-goddess, the daughter of an Inuit goddess and a human man. She was born after the gods battled the Great Beasts of the North, and when both parties were exiled from Earth the gods realized they needed an agent to keep the Beasts from returning. Narya’s birth was aided by Michael Twoyoungmen (aka Shaman) who bonded her to Canada, which allowed her to take human form. Outside of Canada’s borders, however, she is weakened.
Raised by Twoyoungmen (and maturing extremely quickly), the two were recruited together to become members of Alpha Flight. Narya took the civilian identity of Anna McKenzie, and it was with this identity that she fell in love with a man named Doug Thompson. When she became pregnant with his child she was banned by the Inuit gods from returning to their realm. As if that wasn’t bad enough, when she gave birth to her son in the Arctic, an evil named Pestilence possessed her and her son, aging the latter to adulthood and causing the deaths of both him and his father in the resulting battle with Alpha Flight. Narya was also killed by James Hudson, aka Vindicator, and her spirit - along with that of her husband and child - were accepted into the realm of the Inuit gods. However, she was eventually revived by AIM, only to be rescued by Alpha Flight.
Narya was also involved in the Chaos War as the chosen representative of the Northern Gods and survived to return to her lands.
what can she do? Being the daughter of a goddess, Narya has all the wisdom and knowledge of the Inuit gods, though she often lacks the experience to know how to use them; she is, after all, actually about half the age she appears. Snowbird also has a variety of other powers, including the ability to shapeshift into various animals native to Canada, including the Wendigo. She can fly on her own in her human form, create a healing aura around herself to quickly recover from injuries, has superhuman strength, post-cognition (the ability to see into the recent past), can compel others to aid her in her quest to defeat the Great Beasts and can sense other mystical presences and activities.
