MARVELOUS MARVEL LADIES MONTH: CIPHER

first appearance: Young X-Men #8, but in Young X-Men #10 it was revealed that she had been present for previous events that occurred in Astonishing X-Men and New X-Men v1.
who is she? Alisa Tager is a very mysterious individual who prefers her life and past kept to herself. Because of her powers, she has been able to influence several different events without her presence being known, such as when Beast became animalistic in Astonishing X-Men and rampaged through the mansion; Alisa was responsible for helping Ruth Aldine, or Blindfold, at the time. Alisa was the one who first found Jonas Graymalkin in the ruins of the Xavier Institute following a sentinel attack, and eventually she revealed herself to Ink, part of the Young X-Men, in order to get him to help his teammates defeat the “Y-Men”, a group of super-powered humans created by Ink’s tattoo artist, Leon Nunez. Alisa then became a full member of the Young X-Men.
For a time she was in San Francisco with the X-Men, teamed up with Colossus and Surge. When Wolverine opened the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning, however, Alisa became a student, though her appearances have only been random shots in the background (much to my unending disappointment).
what can she do? Alisa has several powers that make her the perfect spy. Not only can she phase through solid matter in a manner similar to Kitty Pryde, but she can also render herself visibly, audibly, and psychically invisible. What that means is she can be invisible to the naked eye, she can make herself completely silent (and even be audible only to certain individuals of her choosing) and, unless she wants to or is not using her powers (in the case of Jean Grey, who first found her), can be psychically invisible to telepaths.
where can i find her? Alisa was technically (as of Young X-Men #10’s retcon) in Astonishing X-Men and New X-Men, but her most prominent appearances are in the Young X-Men series, which you can download here. She’s supposedly part of the Jean Grey School of Higher Learning but so far has only been seen in the background of several issues and on the student roster pages. She has also appeared in X-Men: Legacy #227, 261 and 260.1, and Uncanny X-Men #509.
